Dr. Susan C. Kaplowitz has an undergraduate degree from Hunter College of the City University of New York and Master’s and Doctoral degrees from New York University. She holds a Graduate Certificate in Adult Fitness Management and Sports Medicine from Kean University. She is certified as a Personal Trainer and an Older Adult Specialist from the American Council on Exercise and as an Older Adult Fitness Trainer from the American Institute of Fitness Educators. She also holds a Certification from DSW Fitness in Physical Activity Instruction for Older Adults.
Dr. Kaplowitz is a full time member of the Department of Kinesiology and Health and the Director of the Center for Exercise and Aging. Since 2002, in conjunction with the Exercise and Aging classes she teaches each term, she has brought hundreds of senior citizens from the community to Rutgers for a variety of different programs as well as bringing exercise programs to senior facilities. In 2009 and 2010, she was awarded two grants from the Middlesex County Department of Aging and the New Jersey Dept. of Senior Services to administer a Balance and Fall Prevention Program to selected senior centers in Middlesex County. She is one of 35 Master Trainers in the New Jersey. In 2010 she wrote and produced with her Course Assistants a Manual for Physical Activities for Assisted Living Residences which is now being used in many such facilities in Middlesex County, New Jersey.

Dr. Kaplowitz established the Center for Exercise and Aging in 2001. Along with the students in her Exercise and Aging class (which she teaches each semester), she has worked with hundreds and hundreds of older adults from senior centers, assisted living facilities, etc., and helped run programs including the New Jersey Senior Olympics and the Middlesex County Senior Health and Fitness Walk. In addition, Dr. Kaplowitz developed and implemented a program for “challenged” preschoolers for the Franklin Public School, consulted for the Warren Public Schools and wrote their Curriculum Guide for Adapted Physical Education for grades K-5.
