Programs Overview

Since the Center began 15 years ago, there has been a wide variety of intergenerational Programs implemented. It is estimated that over 1000 older adults and 1000 students in the Exercise and Aging classes have participated together in these Programs.

Through the years

Programs at Assisted Living Facilities: Chelsea (East Brunswick and Manalapan), Parker Home (Highland Park), Arbor Glen (Bridgewater), Westfield Senior Living (Westfield), Stein Home, (Somerset), Sunrise (East Brunswick)

Programs with Senior Centers: East Brunswick, North Brunswick, Piscataway, Perth Amboy, South River, South Brunswick, New Brunswick

Other Programs: Assist at the New Jersey Senior Olympics- held in Woodbridge each September- students manage the registration tables, keep scores and referee at various venues- 2011-2016; Assist at the Middlesex County Senior Walk- students set up tables of information for senior citizens, do fitness testing, assist those who need help “walking’ 2009-2016; Concordia Health Fair (active adult community); Eatontown Senior Walk (held at the Eatontown Mall); Lecture and exercise series at Monroe Village (active adult community) Dr. Kaplowitz has done a myriad of lectures and presentations about fitness/health for older adults through the years.

Other Activities: Workshop for Directors of Senior Centers: Balance Training Workshop- presented by renown expert in the field; The Center was awarded a $8000 grant in 2008 to partner with the Middlesex County Department of Aging to bring the program- A Matter of Balance (national program) to senior venues in Middlesex County; Manual for Physical Activities for Assisted Living Residences- written in 2012; Have used this Manual in directing programs at/for Assisted Living Facilities over these last 5 years; Since 2002, the Professors teaching the Exercise and Aging classes have selected and supervised Course Assistants for a one year position of/for the Center/ Classes; Partnered with the Arthritis Foundation to promote our students to take exercise certifications in arthritis prevention and treatment; A special 15 Year Celebration Program was held in April, 2017.
